Philanthropy

Pi Beta Phi is dedicated to philanthropic and community service efforts that will remove the barrier of illiteracy. This means we support literacy in a number of ways: through unique partnerships with organizations, through financial backings, through club and chapter programming and so much more.

The Fraternity's commitment to literacy dates back almost 100 years to the founding of a settlement school in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Pi Phi was solely responsible for all education in Gatlinburg from 1912-1969. Today’s Pi Beta Phi Elementary School is a testament to Pi Phi’s dedication to education. The original settlement school facilities later became the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, an internationally renowned visual arts complex, boasting an acclaimed faculty and international student body.

In 2007, Pi Beta Phi partnered with First Book, an award-winning organization with a simple mission: to provide children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books. Since 1992, First Book has registered more than 20,000 community-based programs and provided more than 50 million new books to underprivileged children in the United States and Canada.

Our Chapter's Contribution

We, the sisters of the MA Gamma Chapter, place a strong emphasis of philanthropy. From decorating bookplates to selling Pi Beta Bunny Baskets, our main focus is on literacy and our partnership with First Book. Though our first year on campus has mainly involved funraising, we have great plans for the future. We plan to hold our first First Book Speed Read in the fall. We also will begin our Champions are Readers program, in which we will partner with a elementary school class to foster a love of reading in each student.

In addition to our literacy work, the sisters are also involved in various philanthropies and causes. We have participated in various other philanthropy events, such as the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Smoots and the Relay for Life. We also have a Philanthropy Day of Service in which we spend that day giving back to our community.

Philanthropic Service is one of Pi Phi's values and we at the MA Gamma Chapter of Pi Beta Phi do all we can to uphold this value.
